In 2015, in a volunteer role to raise money for the Koonya Garlic festival, I styled and photographed over 30 recipes for the Garlic Feast Cookbook by Janice Sutton, a beautiful big book with lots of recipes and information about the Tasman Peninsula and the Koonya Garlic Festival.  I also helped Janice develop her idea to self publish the book, 12 of the recipes from my website here were chosen to go in the book including this BBQ crayfish. In 2016 Garlic Feast won 2 awards at The Gourmand World cookbook awards, Best Self Published Cookbook and Cook Book of the year and went on to win best Self published book at The Best in the world Gourmand World Cookbook awards.

The Tasmania Pantry Cook book was only possible with the support of quite a few generous and trusting Tasmanian business sponsors, as a hardworking mum  of 3 young kids who spent last year studying full time and purchasing a load of computer and photography gear (we named this GAS at Tafe last year – gear acquisition syndrome) to establish my publishing- food photography-product photography-photography-recipe development-food styling-social media management AND online store business, as well self funding the production and printing of Seafood Everyday, my budget had been well and truly expended!

Get Shucked oyster farm is a must stop for any visit to Bruny Island its set up with a “drive thru” style oyster shop and a Oyster Bar. It’s a working farm and as you enjoy your meal you can see the boats out on the farm in the water and the tractor bringing the boats and oyster racks in. The window in the oyster bar shows you the farm hands and shuckers working. There is a nice variety of beer and wine and a few other non oyster dishes such as fish and chips and the gorgeous Valhala ice cream cone choc tops. We love these ice creams if my kids are going to have a treat that’s not home made its nice to support a Tasmanian small business and my kids now prefer these choices, little Gillespie’s Ginger beer addicts that they are!

On this day my friend Jodie and I shared a dozen Steamy oriental oysters and the kids all had Valhalla ice cream I also had a Sparkling wine, Tasmanian of course but I can’t remember the brand, not relevant, because well…wine, it was good though!

Unfortunately for Jodie and I, the kids all LOVED our oysters!! The oysters had the most delicious stock/sauce/juice they were sitting in which we all drank before eating the oyster. Even my 2-year-old Oscar ate 2 oysters!  Jodie and I only ended up with 2 oysters each but that was ok, as it was in the middle of a day of solid eating, and the cheese factory was the next stop.

But great news, lucky for all you all, Suzanne from get Shucked kindly supported the Tasmania Pantry cookbook and and contributed this delicious Steamy Oriental oyster recipe, this one is going on my Christmas day menu but I reckon I will be cooking it again before then too!

The Tasmania Pantry book is FULL of recipes you will cook all the time meals that will go on your regular weeknight meal planning and special occasions! The suggestions that I gave the chefs and producers when submitting recipes was to think of recipes people will actually use, not to try to impress them with your knowledge of random ingredients that are impossible to find for the home kitchen, with a focus on their own favourite Tasmanian products. Use Tasmanian produce that you can get your hands on, to help households out by making cooking and meal planning easier, so people don’t buy the commercialized packet crap from the major supermarkets or crap takeaways when you can be supporting Tasmanian boutique small producers and good restaurants and cafes.

Find out more about Get Shucked Oyster farm here and Pre order your copy of The Tasmania Pantry cookbook here and check out my range of affordable kitchen products and gorgeous hampers, perfect for gifts!
